Nobody leaves working software for fun. Tally has carried Indian accounting for decades; Marg has run pharmacy counters for nearly as long. If you are typing "Tally alternative for a retail shop" or "Marg ERP alternative" into a search box anyway, something has stopped fitting. It is usually not one dramatic failure but a slow accumulation: the renewal invoice, the new cashier who cannot drive it, the report that waits for the one person who did the course.
This does two things. It names the reasons shops move, using the vendors' own published pages rather than rumour, because these are serious companies and the case for leaving has to survive their own numbers. Then it deals with the part that stops most moves: getting years of items and stock across.
An accounting tool at a retail counter
Tally is accounting software of genuine depth, with ledgers, vouchers, groups, a whole vocabulary. That depth is why accountants trust it. It is also why Tally Solutions has an education subsidiary: Tally Education sells certification courses with names like TallyEssential and TallyProfessional (tallyeducation.com, as of August 2026). A certification market this established says the product both rewards and expects real study. A retail counter has a different constraint: the person billing on Sunday may have joined on Thursday.
Marg states the same reality as a line item. Its published price list carries "Additional training and Implementation charges" of ₹5,400 plus GST (margcompusoft.com price list, checked August 2026). There is nothing wrong with training being priced. But if the billing screen needs a paid course before your staff can run it, that is a fact about the software, and you are allowed to weigh it.
The renewal arithmetic
None of these numbers are hidden. All of them sit on the vendors' own pages. The work is in adding them up for your shop.
TallyPrime sells a perpetual Silver (single-user) licence at ₹22,500 plus 18% GST and Gold (multi-user) at ₹67,500 plus GST, with a rental route at ₹8,100 plus GST for twelve months of Silver (tallysolutions.com/buy-tally, checked August 2026). "Perpetual" covers the licence; staying current is a separate subscription called TSS, and Tally's own TSS FAQ prices a two-year Silver renewal at ₹8,100, about ₹4,050 a year (tallysolutions.com, August 2026). Reseller price pages such as Mark IT Solutions' quote the one-year Silver renewal at ₹4,500 plus GST (markitsolutions.in, August 2026); Tally's page publishes the two-year figure. The numbers are consistent with each other, but you read two sites to learn one price. To Tally's credit, the FAQ is plain about what a lapse means: the software keeps working, and what stops is upgrades, remote access and connected services such as e-invoicing.
Marg ERP publishes a licence table and, further down the same page, a renewal table. The licence: Basic ₹10,300 (marked "Limited Edition", capped at 2 users and 2 companies), Silver ₹13,900, Gold ₹26,000. Add 18% GST to all three, plus ₹3,000 per extra user or company where the edition allows one. Then the renewal table, headed "Marg ARC Charges", runs every year after: Silver ₹4,780; Gold ₹9,550 up to 25 users or ₹19,100 for unlimited users; plus ₹1,050 per additional user and ₹1,030 per extra company, all before GST (margcompusoft.com/marg-price-list.html, checked August 2026).
A user added here, a renewal there, a training visit, a company slot: the true five-year cost of either product is an afternoon with a spreadsheet. We did that afternoon across the market in what billing software costs in India.
Windows is assumed
TallyPrime's published system requirements ask for 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows 7 or above; macOS does not appear on the page (help.tallysolutions.com, "Recommended System Configurations for TallyPrime", checked August 2026). If the machine at your counter is a Mac, or you want it to be, the incumbent path is a Windows PC bought for the purpose or a rented cloud desktop. Layerdots ships native macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel, signed and notarised, and the same app and the same data file run on Windows and on Mac; the Mac build is written up here.
The item master is the real switching cost
Here is the sentence that keeps shops on software they have stopped liking: "I have six years of items in there." Names, MRPs, GST rates, HSN codes, batches: the thought of re-typing all of it outweighs any renewal invoice. Switching costs are the strongest lock-in any vendor has.
There are three routes across, and most shops use two of them. Marg's own Export to Tally writes a master and a daybook file that Layerdots reads together, items, parties, opening stock and history in one go; the Marg migration, step by step, covers it. An item list you can get into an Excel or CSV file, from any software, goes through bulk import with the columns mapped on screen. And the camera covers whatever is left: photograph a supplier's purchase invoice from the phone app or the computer, and the lines are read into a purchase entry for you to check and save, items, quantities, batches and expiry dates included. The goods on your shelves today arrived on last month's purchase invoices, so scanning that stack rebuilds the working catalogue with current stock, not as a data-entry project but as the same purchase entry you will be doing every week from now on. Each page counts as one scan; the trial includes 10, Basic 50 a month, Gold 80, Platinum 200, and extra scans cost ₹1.60 each.
Two caveats. Scanning needs internet, because it is one of the optional cloud parts of an otherwise offline product. And a scanned entry deserves a once-over before you save it, which is why the software puts it in front of you instead of saving it silently.
Questions to put to any vendor, including us
- What happens to billing when your server is down? Layerdots' licence check fails open: if the licence server is unreachable, the software keeps working, so a shop on bad internet is never locked out of billing. The answer to this question tells you who carries the connectivity risk, you or the vendor.
- Can my staff read it? The whole Layerdots interface and the in-app help run in English, Hindi and Hinglish. Staff who read Hindi or romanised Hindi faster than English can bill in the language they read.
- What does a second computer cost? With Layerdots, activate the same licence on a second PC and connect it to your shop: bills, stock and customers sync both ways, and both computers share one invoice number series, so two bills can never carry the same number. The caveat: in this two-computer mode, both machines need internet to bill.
- Can I compute the yearly cost standing in the shop? Layerdots is ₹3,800 plus GST (₹4,484 a year) for Basic, ₹7,000 plus GST (₹8,260 a year) for Gold, and ₹11,000 plus GST (₹12,980 a year) for Platinum. The plans differ by invoice scans per month, number of shops, and how many people you can share a shop with; the pricing section states every figure with GST up front.
- Will GST filing still be a spreadsheet evening? Layerdots builds the GSTR-1 upload files themselves, the portal JSON and the Offline Tool Excel with the HSN sheets, and checks the period and GSTIN before you file.
If Marg runs your pharmacy
Searches for a "Marg alternative for pharmacy" deserve a straight answer, because Marg's pharmacy pedigree is real. A pharmacy that moves must not lose the pharmacy discipline: stock tracked batch by batch, each batch with its own expiry, and an expiry report that flags stock while it can still be sold or returned to the supplier. Layerdots tracks inventory batch-wise with expiry reports, and pharmacy is a business type inside the app. Choose it and the pharmacy defaults, A5 invoices among them, are on. The full treatment, from the doctor field on the customer to the expiry report, is in what a pharmacy needs from billing software.
What switching still costs
It is not free. Even with the camera and the importer doing the typing, expect some evenings of checking entries and a stretch of running both systems. Your accountant need not move: if your CA keeps your final accounts in an accounting package and is happy there, that stays their tool, and Layerdots' job is the counter, the stock and the GST paperwork you hand over. And a subscription is not a licence in disguise: Layerdots is a yearly subscription, described as one, with the GST-inclusive figure printed beside it.
Questions that come up
Can Layerdots import my items from Tally or Marg?
From Marg, directly: its Export to Tally files are read as they are. From anything else, an
item list in Excel or CSV goes through bulk import with the columns mapped on screen. And the
invoice scanner rebuilds whatever is missing from a month or two of purchase bills, because
whatever is selling steadily arrived on one of them.
What does it cost?
Seven days free with full features, no online account and no card. Basic is ₹4,484 a year
with GST included, Gold ₹8,260, Platinum ₹12,980; the pricing
section has the plan details, and the same app runs on Windows and on Mac.
